Ports of Entry
A port of entry is a port at which passengers or cargo enter the administrative or customs territory of a country. International airports and seaports are usually ports of entry, as are cities on a land border. It is at these points where customs authorities are assigned with authority to accept entries of merchandise, to collect duties, and to enforce the various provisions of customs laws. There are 317 official ports of entry in the United States and 14 preclearance offices in Canada and the Caribbean. The choice of whether to become a port of entry is up to the civil authority controlling the port.
To locate a U.S. port of entry visit U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
