The value of
California
's worldwide merchandise exports for 2006 totaled $127.7 billion, a 9.3 percent increase from 2005,
according to the
Northern
California
World
Trade
Center
. This is a record high amount for
California
exports. Computer products, transportation equipment, machinery, and
chemical products were
California
's top four export sectors. The state's top three export markets were
Mexico
,
Canada
, and
Japan
, followed by
China
in the fourth spot. 2006 marked the first time that
Canada
has surpassed
Japan
in the state’s export market rankings.
Exports of computer and electronic products were the top commodity, with
a value of $44.5 billion. After computer products,
California
’s largest exports were machinery ($14.8 billion), transportation
equipment ($13.5 billion) and chemical products ($8.6 billion).
Trade statistics were generated using data provided by the U.S.
Department of Commerce’s Office of Trade and Industry Information.
“The increase in global oil prices, combined with the continued
relatively low value of the U.S. dollar and the duty-free benefits of the
North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on goods exported to Mexico
and Canada, have all played a part in expanding export sales in 2006,”
said Hardy Acree, Board Chair for the NCWTC and director of airports for
the Sacramento County Airport System.
Mexico
remained the top market for
California
exports with recorded sales of $19.6 billion.
Canada
was the state's second-largest export market with $14.2 billion.
Japan
ranked third with $13.9 billion, and
China
finished fourth with $9.9 billion. Exports from
California
to
China
have nearly tripled between 2000 and 2006, expanding from $3.5 billion in
2000 to nearly $10 billion last year.
California
is the top
U.S.
exporting state to
China
.
"As average incomes in
China
increase, so does demand for quality products
California
, including high-tech components and agricultural goods from
California
,” said
Michele Gault
, executive director at the
Northern
California
World
Trade
Center
.
According to Census Bureau data, rice is the top export commodity being
shipped out of the
Sacramento
area. $85.3 million worth of rice was exported from the
Port
of
Sacramento
in 2006, with the vast majority of shipments going to
Japan
. Other products being exported directly from the
Sacramento
International
Airport
include electrical machinery, semiconductors, fireworks and optical
equipment. The largest export markets for goods shipped from
Sacramento
are
China
and
Japan
.
Among all states,
California
ranked 2nd in total worldwide exports, behind
Texas
.
Texas
,
California
, and
New York
continued to be the top three exporting states. These three states account
for one-third of the
U.S.
’s total annual exports. Total
U.S.
exports for 2006 were $1.03 trillion, a nearly 15 percent increase over
the same time period in 2005.
